Evidential Capture: Domestic Abuse
Case Study: “Emma”
Emma, a professional in her late thirties, had been experiencing ongoing harassment and controlling behaviour from a former partner following the breakdown of their relationship. What began as persistent messaging escalated over several months into unannounced visits to her home, monitoring of her movements, and subtle but intimidating threats.
Despite the impact on her daily life, Emma felt unable to report the behaviour to the police. She was concerned about not being believed, worried the behaviour might not meet a criminal threshold, and fearful that reporting could escalate the situation further. Like many in her position, she felt stuck between enduring the behaviour and taking a step she did not yet feel ready for.
Emma made contact with the service seeking advice.
From the outset, she was provided with a calm, non judgemental space to talk through what had been happening. She was guided on how to begin documenting incidents in a structured and evidentially useful way, including preserving messages, logging dates and times, and capturing patterns of behaviour that she had not previously recognised as significant.
Over the following weeks, Emma used the secure evidence collation service to store screenshots, call logs, and a detailed incident diary. This removed the burden of holding everything herself and ensured the material was organised in a format that could later be used for legal purposes if required.
Alongside this, she received clear, practical guidance on safeguarding measures, including changes to her routine, digital security, and how to respond safely to further contact. She was also given an overview of potential legal options, including non molestation orders and the criminal thresholds for harassment and stalking, allowing her to make informed decisions without pressure.
As the behaviour continued, the documented evidence began to show a clear pattern of escalating conduct.
When Emma felt ready, she chose to report the matter to the police. The evidence bundle she had built meant she was able to present a coherent, chronological account from the outset. This significantly reduced delays, supported the assessment of risk, and helped officers identify the behaviour as part of a sustained course of conduct rather than isolated incidents.
The case progressed, resulting in protective measures being put in place and formal action taken against the offender.
Relationship 'Red Flags'
Case Study: "Chloe"
Chloe had begun a relationship 6 months prior to contacting Vixen. She'd had concerns from early in the relationship after hearing rumours that her partner had been unfaithful and abusive to previous partners. His escalating temper had added to her concerns, and she felt as though he was becoming more controlling of her. Her family had also voiced concerns about his sudden mood changes and attempts to alienate her from friends and family. Online, Chloe also noticed worrying behaviours such as mysoginistic, abusive and sexualised comments towards other women. He was also secretive around his phone and personal finances.
We firstly advised Chloe to consider a Clare’s Law application, which can reveal past domestic abuse‑related criminal information. Whilst Clare's Law is good for those matters reported to Police, it is estimated that 4 in 5 victims never tell the authorities. It also does not cover financial behaviour, lifestyle patterns, online activity, or signs of infidelity. Emma wanted a more complete picture before making decisions about her future, especially as due to his employment she did not think he had a criminal record.
Vixen carried out a discreet, multi‑layered investigation combining open source intelligence, lifestyle pattern analysis, financial checks, and background verification. This revealed questionable online behaviour, inconsistencies in his employment history and indicators of hidden debt. We also identified additional risk factors that supported Chloe’s growing concerns and called her partners' honesty into question.
If you or a family member are worried about a relationship, Vixen can help you get the clarity you need. When something feels “off,” that instinct is often worth listening to. We provide discreet, evidence‑based checks to help confirm your concerns, protect your wellbeing, and keep you or your loved ones safe.
